Story Synopsis

High in a quiet barn, a Speckled Hen builds a snug nest and lays twelve eggs, one each day. With every egg, she whispers a hope for the chick inside—and she gives each one a name. Among them is Humpty Dumpty. He’s not a chick yet, but in this story he already feels like a personality: round, curious, and eager for the world. As the days pass, the barn feels steady and warm—until a small accident brings worry. An egg can crack so easily, and everyone wants to help. The tale stays gentle: it’s about careful hands, patient waiting, and the comfort of being cared for when something goes wrong. Humpty’s story becomes less about “a fall” and more about a barn learning how to be kind.

Story Excerpt

Up high in a barn, on top of a soft pile of hay, a Speckled Hen made a snug little nest. It was a quiet, hidden spot. She liked it there, because she wanted to keep her eggs safe and still. Each day, for twelve days, she laid one pretty egg. When she laid an egg, she would cluck softly to herself, “In time, this will be a sweet little chick, with fluffy down and bright eyes. It will be one of my children, and I will love it dearly.” And each time she laid an egg, she gave it a name. The first egg she named Cluckety-Cluck. The next she named Cadaw-Cut. And so it went, until the twelfth egg. The twelfth egg was the biggest of all—smooth and white and nicely shaped. The Speckled Hen smiled proudly. “I will call you Humpty Dumpty,” she said. But the nest was very full now. Humpty Dumpty lay close to the edge. Then the Speckled Hen went off to the barnyard to find something to eat, clucking happily as she went. As soon as she was gone, the eggs began to fuss. Cluckety-Cluck, who was in the middle and felt very important, called out, “It’s crowded in here! Move up there, all of you!” And—kick!—he nudged Cadaw-Cut.
