Little Dorothy lived in the country, on a farm where the fields were wide and the woods were close by. She was the only child there, and her mother let her wander where the sunlight fell, as long as she was careful. On bright mornings, Dorothy’s mother tied a sun-bonnet under Dorothy’s chin. Then Dorothy would skip out to the meadows, where the grass brushed her ankles and the air smelled sweet. Dorothy loved the flowers. She learned their names, and she stepped softly so she would not crush a single one. She loved animals, too—so much that she listened to them with her whole heart, and somehow she understood their little ways and meanings. And the animals noticed. The horse, who liked it when Dorothy stroked his soft nose, told the cow, “She is gentle.” The cow told the dog. The dog told the cat. The cat told her black kitten. And one day, the black kitten told a rabbit they met near the turnip patch, “You can trust that little girl.” So it happened that a rabbit—timid as rabbits are—peeked from a small bush at the edge of the wood and saw Dorothy standing not far away.
