Once upon a time, there lived a King who was very rich, but his wealth brought him no joy. The Queen, his wife, was gone, and his heart was filled with such sorrow that he stayed in a small room, overcome with grief. His subjects tried to comfort him, but nothing could lift his spirits. At last, a lady dressed in black came to the castle. She too had lost someone dear, and she understood the King’s sadness. They spoke for hours, sharing stories of those they missed, and in time, their shared comfort grew into affection. Soon, the King married the sorrowful lady, and she became the new Queen. The King had a daughter named Fiordelisa, who was fifteen years old, with a spirit as bright and lovely as her name. The new Queen also had a daughter, Turritella, who was brought up by her godmother, the Fairy Mazilla. Turritella was not as gracious or kind as Fiordelisa, and when the Queen saw them together, she grew jealous of the princess. She did everything she could to make the King favor her own daughter. One day, the King announced that it was time for the princesses to be married. “ The first suitable prince who visits our court shall have one of them as his bride, ” he said.
