Story Synopsis
A princess and her attendants lose their way in the forest and come upon a mysterious iron stove. From inside, a voice begs for help: a prince has been enchanted and trapped within it. The princess hesitates, but she agrees to do what she can. The stove instructs her: carry it to her father’s castle, and the spell may weaken. She keeps her promise. At the castle, the enchanted prince asks for a second promise: when he is freed, she must marry him. The princess, thinking it will never truly happen, agrees. Soon after, the spell breaks and the prince is restored. But the story doesn’t end there—promises have weight. Through a twist of fate, the prince is taken away, and the princess must travel far to find him again. Her journey is filled with strange helpers, hard choices, and moments where she must use both courage and careful thinking. She learns to endure discomfort, to ask for help, and to hold onto hope even when the path is confusing. Along the way she encounters deceptive comfort and false appearances, but she keeps moving toward the truth. Step by step, she gathers what she needs—information, tools, and small alliances—until she finally reaches the place where the prince is held. In the end, persistence wins. The princess and prince are reunited, and the long promise-journey closes with restoration and relief. The Iron Stove is a fairy tale about keeping one’s word, staying brave through detours, and trusting that steady love can outlast obstacles.
Story Excerpt
In the days when wishing still seemed to work, a king’s son was put under a spell by an old witch. She shut him inside an iron stove deep in a forest, where the trees stood close together and the paths twisted until they looked the same. Year after year passed, and no one found a way to free him. One day a king’s daughter rode out with her attendants, but the forest swallowed the sound of hooves and voices. Before long she was alone. She wandered for nine days, sleeping under branches and eating what little she could find, turning this way and that until she could no longer tell where her father’s kingdom lay. On the ninth day she came to a strange sight: an iron stove sitting by itself among the trees, dark and silent as a boulder. As she stood there, a voice came from inside the iron. “Whence comest thou, and whither goest thou?” Startled, she answered honestly, “I have lost my father’s kingdom, and cannot get home again.” Then the voice said, “I will help thee to get home again, and that indeed most swiftly, if thou wilt promise to do what I desire of thee. I am the son of a far greater King than thy father, and I will marry thee.” The princess stared at the iron stove. Her heart beat fast. “Marry… an iron stove?” she thought, frightened and puzzled at once. But she longed to see her father again, and the forest felt endless. So she said, carefully, “I promise.” The voice answered, “Thou shalt return here, and bring a knife with thee, and scrape a hole in the iron.” At once a silent companion appeared—someone who walked near her, as if guiding her, yet spoke not a word.
