Story Synopsis

An old peasant and his wife live simply, working hard and hoping their son will find a brighter path. One day a richly dressed stranger arrives and asks to share their plain country meal. The family welcomes him. Then they learn the truth: he is the Master Thief, famous for impossible feats. The Master Thief notices the boy’s sharp mind and invites him to learn. The boy becomes an apprentice and is tested again and again—against watchful guards, locked places, and situations that seem hopeless. Each challenge becomes a puzzle: stay calm, watch carefully, and think two steps ahead. As the boy grows bolder, he also faces the deeper question: skill is powerful—so how will he use it? The story’s long arc mixes suspense with ingenuity and ends with resolution, leaving room for a bedtime talk about choices, fairness, and using talents wisely.

Soon she was washing and scrubbing potatoes, rubbing them until they were clean, and shaping them into the plain potato balls the country people liked. While she worked, the old man said to the stranger, “ Come into my garden with me. I still have something to do. ” In the garden, holes had been dug for young trees. The old man lifted a sapling into one, pressed earth around it, and drove a post beside it. Then he tied the little tree to the post — above, below, and in the middle — so it would grow straight. The stranger watched closely. “ Have you no children to help you? ” he…
