An old man and his wife sat resting outside their poor little house, their hands still dusty from work. The day was quiet — until the rumble of wheels came down the road. A splendid carriage rolled up, pulled by four black horses. A richly dressed gentleman stepped down, shining like someone from a storybook. The peasant rose and bowed as best he could. “ What do you want, sir, ” he asked, “ and how can I help you? ” The stranger held out his hand in a friendly way. “ I want nothing, ” he said, “ except to enjoy a country dish for once. Cook me some potatoes the way you always do. Then I’ll sit at your table and eat them with pleasure. ” The old man smiled, surprised. “ You must be a count, or a prince — maybe even a duke. Noble gentlemen do have strange wishes. But you shall have what you ask. ” His wife hurried inside. Soon she was washing and scrubbing potatoes, rubbing them until they were clean, and shaping them into the plain potato balls the country people liked. While she worked, the old man said to the stranger, “ Come into my garden with me. I still have something to do. ” In the garden, holes had been dug for young trees. The old man lifted a sapling into one, pressed earth around it, and drove a post beside it. Then he tied the little tree to the post — above, below, and in the middle — so it would grow straight.
