This is the story of a mirror, a friendship, and a journey to the coldest corner of the world. It begins with a mischievous troll who crafted a special looking - glass. This was no ordinary mirror. It had a strange power : anything beautiful or good reflected in it would shrink and look plain, while anything flawed or unpleasant would seem much larger and worse than it truly was. The troll and his followers carried the mirror everywhere, delighting in how it twisted the world. One day, they tried to carry it all the way up to the heavens, but it slipped from their grasp and shattered upon the earth into millions and billions of tiny fragments. These slivers of glass, some no bigger than a grain of sand, were carried by the wind across the world. If a speck flew into a person’s eye, they began to see only the faults in everything. And if a tiny splinter found its way into a person’s heart, that was the most terrible of all, for their heart would grow cold and hard, like a lump of ice.
